What
can I do to lower the risks of Prempro side effects while
taking estrogen or estrogen with progestin?
Here are some suggestions:
- Do a self-breast examination regularly and have a breast
exam and mammogram (breast X-ray) annually.
- Ask your doctor how you can lower your cholesterol, manage
high blood pressure and diabetes, quite smoking, and lose
weight to decrease your risks of heart disease.
- Consider natural alternatives to taking estrogen and ask
your doctor for advise.
Are
estrogens in patches, vaginal creams, or vaginal rings safer
than Prempro?
It has not been determined if other forms are safer than
Prempro. Most of the data on the long-term estrogen health
effects come from studies involving oral estrogen and progestin
tablets (including Prempro).
Who
should not take Prempro?
Do not take Prempro if you:
- Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant,
- Had a stroke or heart attack in the past year,
- Have or had certain types of cancer (consult your physician),
- Have or had blood clots, or
- Have or had liver problems.
If
you think your breast cancer, stroke or heart attack may
have been caused by oral contraceptives, Prempro or other
hormone replacement therapy (HRT), please call or e-mail
