Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) involves giving a combination of hormones to women to help relieve the symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, and loss of bone mass. While HRT does help with these symptoms, a recent study found a number of alarming side effects that were so severe, the study was abruptly halted.
Adverse effects cited include breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in the lungs. Earlier studies had already indicated a relationship between HRT and uterine cancer, ovarian cancer and thrombo-embolic disease.
As a result, warnings against hormone replacement therapy have now been issued, including warnings for Prempro, Premarin, Estrogen, Progestin and oral contraceptives.
