Bextra (valdecoxib) is a member of the nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory class of drugs, also known as NSAIDs. Bextra is used to reduce symptoms associated with
osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis such as pain and inflammation, in addition to treating painful
menstrual symptoms.
In a study released November 2004,
patients who took Bextra were twice as likely to suffer heart attacks and strokes. These results
were even worse than the studies associated with Vioxx, another COX-2 inhibitor that was removed
from the market recently.
Side effects
due to the extended use of Bextra can range from simple indigestion or nausea
to stomach pain and diarrhea. Those taking Bextra are also at a heightened risk
of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths, strokes and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is an allergic reaction that results in painful blistering
of the skin. Tragically, as the condition evolves, the skin will slough off.
If you
or a family member have taken Bextra and suffered any of these side
effects, please email our personal injury lawyers or call us immediately.
