Accutane Birth Defects

Accutane, also known as Isotretinoin, should not be taken by females of childbearing age who have any chance of becoming pregnant, nor by pregnant women under any circumstances, as the drug is known to cause birth defects. There is an extremely high risk of fetal problems if a woman is or becomes pregnant while taking Accutane, even if the drug is only taken for a short time.

Birth defects associated with Accutane include:

Accutane can cause problems before a woman even knows she is pregnant. Sometimes the problems aren’t immediately visible, but may involve mental retardation or other disabilities.

Paternal Use of Accutane and Birth Defects

Currently, our office is investigating cases of paternal use of Accutane at the time of conception and birth defects as a result thereof.
